The Class 2 District 8 Girls basketball playoffs are taking place at Tipton High School starting February 25th at 4:30 p.m.. Tipton of course is #1, followed by New Franklin, Russellville, Eugene, Cole Camp, Slater and Smithton. Cole Camp had 7 wins on the season, Eugene had 4 at the start of the game. Eugene is led by a scoring machine in sophomore Ryleigh Kliethermes. She is averaging nearly 24 points per game and needed just 1 point to hit 1000 in just her 2nd year. Kliethermes got her 1000th with a 3 just over a minute into the game. But after trailing by 5, Cole Camp scored the next 10! MacKenzie Moellman with 3, Payten Shoemaker with a steal and layup, and Madilynn Ogle with a rebound put back and a long range 3. For the qtr, Shoemaker with 3 steals and a blocked shot. Yes perfect timing on her jump allowed the petite Shoemaker to foil an Eagles shot. Cole Camp up 10-7 after 1. Cole Camp held a narrow lead till late 2nd qtr. Eugene put together a 10-1 run and so led 22-17 going into the locker room. Emma Thayer and Marilyn Hesse with 3's after the break put Cole Camp back in the lead. Kliethermes with multiple drives to the basket, and finished most with scores. However Leah Allison countered with 4, and Ogle another 3. On a last second shot, Shoemaker was fouled and made 2 of 3 freethrows. This put Cole Camp ahead 32-31 after 3. Back and forth in the 4th. Two huge 3's by Thayer mid qtr gave Cole Camp a 3-point lead. Another sophomore for Eugene, Claire Wilburs did some nice work near the basket scoring 6 in the qtr. Down by 3, Ogle hit a game saving 3 at 30 seconds and the Cole Camp defense denied Eugene a score, so regulation time ended at 43-43. Just 24 hours earlier, the Bluebird boys pulled out an overtime win. Could the Ladies do the same? You bet they did! Trailing by 3 after 2 minutes of overtime, Allison nailed a 3 and then a steal to layup combo! Ogle made it a 4 point lead with a pair from the charity line at 55 seconds. Then by making 4 of 7 freethrows in the last 40 seconds, the Lady Bluebirds clinched a well-earned 54-47 District victory in overtime! Scoring: Ogle 17, Allison 12, Thayer 9, Moellman 6, Shoemaker 6, Hesse 4. Kliethermes with 26 for Eugene. Rebounds Moellman 8, Allison 8, Ogle 6. Shoemaker 5 steals. The Class 3 District 13 basketball bracket includes the following teams. Warsaw #1, followed by Sherwood, Windsor, Lone Jack, Stover, Holden and Cole Camp. Games took place at Windsor High School on February 24th. Cole Camp 4-16 and Sherwood 12 - 13 tipped off at 4:30 and a good start for the Bluebirds. Sherwood had blocked a Cole Camp attempt near the basket, but Kolton Phillips alertly picked up the loose ball and powered up a basket. Blake Abey with a 3 helped Cole Camp to an early 7-0 lead. Freshman Bradyn Polzin scored 6 for Sherwood. Colton Dieckman added 4 late and Cole Camp led 11-10 after 1. Sherwood with a 12-3 advance made for an 8-point lead with 3:30 left in the 2nd. Connor Petersen came in off the bench and pitched in 5. Kolby Bohon with his 2nd fieldgoal of the qtr pulled Cole Camp within 1. By halftime, the score was tied at 23. Dieckman with 4 in the 3rd, Dasch Kaiser, Bovey Clark and Petersen each 2. Two may not sound like a lot, but in playoff games a single basket, block, or turnover can be major! Cole Camp with a 33-32 advantage after 24 minutes. Sherwood moved ahead by 4 by mid 4th qtr. Dieckman a 2 and Abey a 3 put the Bluebirds back up by 1. Sherwood a 3 at 41 seconds for a two-point lead, but Dieckman tied it up again with a basket at 30 seconds. Several timeouts and attempts later, the score was tied at 40 at the end of regulation. After Sherwood scored, Dieckman and Phillips both with baskets putting Cole Camp ahead by 2 at 1:45. Freethrow contest from there on. Sherwood made 2 of 4 and Cole Camp made 3 of 6. Enough for Cole Camp to seal up a 47-44 victory! Got to be happy for the team to win after such a challenging year! Scoring: Dieckman 15, Petersen 10, Bohon 8, Abey 6, Phillips 4, Clark 2, Kaiser 2. Polzin led Sherwood with 17, just about his season average. Petersen with 7 rebounds. Bluebirds play again at Windsor February 26th around 7:30. Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article.

The Bluebird boys and girls basketball teams were in Green Ridge Friday February 21st. Been a bumpy road this winter so victories in the finale would be tremendously welcome! Bovey Clark with a pair of 3's mid 1st qtr of the JV game erased an early 4-point deficit. Will Espey and Micah Davis pitched in 2 each as Cole Camp led 10-8 after 1. Just a thought. If you happen to see Espey this summer, by him a steak or pizza. Another 10 lb of muscle on his tall frame might do wonders! Green Ridge outscored Cole Camp 5-1 in the second and so led 13-11 at halftime. Ty Loganbill with 4 in the 3rd for Cole Camp, however the Tigers increased their lead to 23 -16 by the end of 3. Landon Bauer with a 3 at 4:08 in the 4th touched off a 13-2 come back for the Bluebirds! Brett Burdick and Loganbill with 5 each in that effort. Final score of Cole Camp 30, Green Ridge 27. Scoring: Loganbill 9, Clark 7, Burdick 7, Bauer 3, Davis 2, Espey 2. Espey 4 blocks and 4 rebounds. In the Varsity Girls game, Cole Camp came in at 6-17 and Green Ridge was 6-15. Both teams with talented underclassmen(women) gaining experience for next year. One of those for Cole Camp, freshman Leah Allison with 4 points and a steal in the first 1:30. Green Ridge made a steal mid qtr and looked like a layup coming. Not so! Marilyn Hesse was about 5 ft behind at midcourt, but caught the Lady Tiger near the free throw line and flicked the ball away. Great Hustle! Emma Thayer with a corner 3 helped Cole Camp lead 11-7 after 1. Strong mid game for another freshman Madilynn Ogle as she landed a 3 and a steal to layup combo. Thayer another 3 as Cole Camp led 23-16 at halftime. Ogle with 5 and Thayer another dinger in the third. Payten Shoemaker made a steal and resulting layup at 10 seconds allowing the Lady Bluebirds a 34-25 advantage after 3. Allison a traditional 3-point play in the last qtr. MacKenzie Moellman added 3 to the scoreboard as the Lady Bluebirds won it 42-35. They are now 7-17 overall and 4-4 in conference. Scoring: Ogle 13, Thayer 9, Allison 9, Moellman 6, Timoshchuk 2, Shoemaker 2, Hesse 1. Freshman Elyse Cooley with 10 leading Green Ridge. Rebounds: Hesse 9, Moellman 8, Allison 6, Ogle 6. The Green Ridge Booster Club had a freethrow / 3-point shot contest during halftime as a fundraiser. For $1, anyone could try their luck. Well 2nd grader Colborn Hesse, son of Andrew and Leslie went out there and hit 'em both! He won his choice of dessert. Likely a lot of games ahead for that young man! So could the 3-16 Bluebird boys make it a sweep against the 9-11 Tigers? A strong start would certainly help, and the Bluebirds delivered! Kolton Phillips with three offensive rebounds he put back up and in. Colton Dieckman added 4 in a 14-4 start. Phillips a steal layup combo late help Cole Camp lead 18-9 after 1. Green Ridge had good luck from beyond the 3-point line in the 2nd qtr. Three long range shots fell in and a 1 point game by mid qtr. Bovey Clark nailed a 3 for Cole Camp, but another 3 by Green Ridge at the buzzer made it 23 - 23 at halftime. The Tigers led by 2 at the 4-minute mark of the 3rd. Was a drought in scoring about the set in? While Green Ridge went scoreless the last 4 minutes of the qtr, Cole Camp added 9! Blake Abey with a steal to lay up, giving him 6 points in the qtr. Dieckman tossed in 4, but perhaps as much impact was a shot from Dasch Kaiser. With just a few seconds left, Kaiser caught an inbound pass on the left wing. He turned, shot, and drained a 3! Cole Camp up 36-29. Dieckman with the first 6 in the last qtr for Cole Camp. Any hope for a Green Ridge comeback was silenced with an 8-1 run by the Bluebirds mid qtr. Kolby Bohon, who experienced foul trouble early in the game, pumped in a 3 and 4 of 4 freethrows down the stretch. Cole Camp put it away 53-40. Scoring: Dieckman 16, Abey 10, Phillips 9, Bohon 7, Kaiser 6, Clark 3, Petersen 2. Soph. Jack Hoos with 11 leading the Tigers. Districts February 24th at Windsor vs Sherwood at 4:30 for the boys. Girls at Tipton facing Eugene at 4:30 on Tuesday the 25th. Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article.
