Lady Bluebird Basketball: Well here we are in a New Year and another Stover Invitational Basketball Tournament is underway. Here are the Girls teams in order of rank. Eldon, Russellville, Knob Noster, Stoutland, Stover, Versailles, Cole Camp and Holden.
Cole Camp met Russellville at 6 p.m. January 5th and led the game 7-4 nearing the 5 minute mark of quarter #1. However K'Lea Basnett scored 8 in the next minute, then another 6 in 30 seconds as the long-range 3's were falling for her. Russellville ahead 23-9 after 1.
Strong offensive effort by Lillyanne Mellen in the 2nd qtr. She scored 10 for the Lady Bluebirds, Madilynn Ogle a 3, and Leah Allison 2 for 2 free throws. Basnett another 6 in the 2nd, giving her 22 in the first half. Cole Camp 24, Russellville 37 at halftime.
The Lady Indians outscored Cole Camp 22-5 in the 3rd qtr. Can't explain the following differences. In qtrs 1 and 3, Russellville outscored Cole Camp 45-14. In qtrs 2 and 4, Cole Camp outscored the Lady Indians 35-33. Guess Cole Camp needs more even numbered qtrs. Regardless the score, little Payten Brandt stood her position and drew an offensive charging foul on a larger Russellville player mid 3rd qtr. Russellville up 59-29 after 3.
Katherine Timoshchuk with 7 in the 4th. Mellen a 3 and a nice defensive rebound she grabbed, went the length of the court for a layup. Add in 6 from Kristin Carl, including a traditional 3-point play at 2 minutes had narrowed the lead to 20. And since Russellville has limited players, there were still three or more starters on the floor during this Lady Bluebird comeback effort. So a productive outing for Cole Camp, though Russellville won the game 78-49.
Scoring: Mellen 22, Carl 8, Timoshchuk 7, Brandt 5, Allison 4, Ogle 3. Basnett, a senior led the Lady Indians with 34, 3 above her average. Mellen 9 rebounds, Ogle 7. Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article!!

Bluebird Basketball: Cole Camp met St Paul's Concordia Saturday December 20th as part of the 2025 W-K Shootout.
The Ladies tipped off at 10:30 a.m. and Madilynn Ogle scored the first 5 for Cole Camp. Bella Woods, a senior averaging 15 points per game, was the only Lady Saint to score. Cole Camp lead 9-5 after 1.
Strong offensive output by Cole Camp in the 2nd qtr. Five lady bluebirds scored led by the small but determined Payten Brandt! She sank two 3 pointers and a 2-point fieldgoal in the last 3 minutes before halftime. Thus Cole Camp had a 26-14 cushion at the break.
Leah Allison with 4 in the 3rd helped push the lead to 18 mid qtr. Woods added 4 from there leaving a 34-20 tally favoring Cole Camp.
St Paul's quickly cut the lead to 8 in the 4th. Counting the last 4:50 of the 3rd and the first 2:30 of the 4th without a basket, Cole Camp needed someone to score! Katherine Timoshchuk, Brandt and Lillyann Mellen each with a fieldgoal to produce an 11-point lead with 3 minutes to go. Chloe Fahrmeier, who had sat earlier in the game due to foul trouble, caught fire scoring 7 in one minute. So a 4 point game with 1:57 to go. Timoshchuk 2 huge freethrows at 1 minute and the Lady Bluebirds defense was able to deny the Saints until Woods made a basket at 4 seconds. Final of Cole Camp 42, St Paul's 38.
Scoring: Brandt 12, Ogle 9, Timoshchuk 6, Allison 6, Mellen 5, Carl 4. Fahrmeier with 18, Woods 17 for St. Paul's. Allison and Mellen both 7 rebounds.
Varsity Boys followed shortly after noon and the Saints were pretty well in control throughout. Senior guard Tate Kreisel scored 13 in the 1st qtr. Will Espey with 4 and Kolton Phillips 2 as Cole Camp trailed 6 - 17 after 1.
Besides Kreisel at guard, the Saints are Blessed with several big boys in the 6'3" to 6'6" range. They reeled off an11-0 run opening the 2nd qtr. Bovey Clark drained a 3 from way back and Colton Dieckman a layup for Cole Camp. Halftime score St Paul's 30, Cole Camp 11.
Clark a pair of 3's in the 3rd. Blake Abey 2 fieldgoals and 3 points each by Brett Burdick and Dasch Kaiser. All total a 16-point effort, which is good! Except the Saints added 20, so they now led 50 - 27.
Both teams cleared their bench in the last qtr. Ty Loganbill added 2 for Cole Camp and a grandson of Cole Camp retired Pastor Fred Hertwig scored a basket for the Saints. Final of St Paul's 64, Cole Camp 37.
Scoring: Clark 13, Abey 6, Phillips 4, Espey 4, Kaiser 3, Burdick 3, Dieckman 2, Loganbill 2. Kreisel 25 for the Saints.
Let's close out 2025 with some good news. Marilyn Hesse's recovery from shoulder surgery seems to be going well! Plans are the brace holding her arm will soon disappear and she will start physical therapy. And Madilynn Ogle was named to the All State Volleyball Team! Her assist total was 3rd best in Class 2 schools and #11 over all statewide!
Have a Blessed Christmas and Healthy New Year! Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article.

Jr. High Student Council Caroling Night

Bluebird Basketball: Cole Camp Varsity girls and boys basketball teams were in Warsaw December 16th. Will cover the girls first, but a pretty special moment at the start of the boys game took place.
Madilynn Ogle started the game with a hot hand sinking a pair of long-range 3's. Warsaw's Aleannah Yoder countered with 6 close range points as she darted to the basket. Lillyann Mellen with 4 free throws helping Cole Camp lead 16-11 after 1.
Mellen another 6 in the 2nd, followed by Leah Allison with 5. Cole Camp led by 10 mid qtr, then Warsaw's big freshman Kenyan Beck took over. She had 9 in the 2nd qtr which ended at Cole Camp 29, Warsaw 27.
Beck another 6 in the 3rd. Heck of an effort by Kristin Carl for the Lady Bluebirds. She tallied all 6 points of the qtr and grabbed a rebound or 2. Warsaw had moved ahead 41-35 by the end of the 3rd.
Katherine Timoshchuk took on the role of point guard mid 4th qtr. She made a steal under the basket defensively, took off dribbling down the court and was headed for a possible layup when fouled. Timoshchuk with 4 in the 4th, but Warsaw took the game 51-43.
Scoring: Carl 12, Mellen 10, Allison 9, Timoshchuk 6, Ogle 6. Beck with 20 leading Warsaw. Timoshchuk 8 rebounds, Mellen 4 steals.
Warsaw recognized their Senior athletes, 6 boys and 3 girls prior to the boys game. One of those boys Tyler Fajen has some physical limitations, but he was on the floor when the game started. Warsaw "won" the tip, passed the ball to Tyler and he scored the first fieldgoal while Cole Camp stood aside. How about that! Tyler will always have that memory that on Senior night, which was also his Birthday, he scored the first basket!
Play continued after a substitution and by way of Colton Dieckman with 6 and Bovey Clark adding 5, Cole Camp led 11-8 after 1 qtr.
Lots of passes, not much scoring in the 2nd. Will Espey with 5 and Blake Abey a steal to basket combo. Warsaw nailed a 3 late so a close 18- 16 lead for Cole Camp at halftime.
The Wildcats must have had better refreshments during the break than Cole Camp. They connected on three shots from downtown, a traditional 3 plus others. Single baskets by Kolton Phillips and Dieckman were it for Cole Camp. Warsaw led 31-22 after 3.
Regardless the Bluebirds were able to narrow the margin to 5 in the 4th. Clark with 2 of 2 freethrows and a long range 3. Espey chipped in 4, but the Wildcats still prevailed 38-33.
Scoring: Dieckman 10, Clark 10, Espey 9, Phillips 2, Abey 2. Brennan Slavens with 13 to lead the Wildcats. Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article!!

Congratulations to our JH Girls & Boys Basketball teams! Both teams brought home 1st place at the Lincoln Tournament tonight. Way to go, Bluebirds!

Mrs. McLaughlin’s Forensics class put some holiday mischief on trial today as the Grinch faced the courtroom! Students analyzed a probable cause statement written by our SRO, Trampus Jackson, examined evidence, and took on the roles of prosecution and defense to determine whether the Grinch was truly guilty or just misunderstood.
Critical thinking, teamwork, and a little holiday fun made for a very engaging lesson in forensic reasoning and the justice process. Thank you, Officer Jackson, for all of your assistance as Head Bailiff!
