The Bluebird boys and girls basketball teams were in Green Ridge Friday February 21st. Been a bumpy road this winter so victories in the finale would be tremendously welcome!
Bovey Clark with a pair of 3's mid 1st qtr of the JV game erased an early 4-point deficit. Will Espey and Micah Davis pitched in 2 each as Cole Camp led 10-8 after 1. Just a thought. If you happen to see Espey this summer, by him a steak or pizza. Another 10 lb of muscle on his tall frame might do wonders!
Green Ridge outscored Cole Camp 5-1 in the second and so led 13-11 at halftime.
Ty Loganbill with 4 in the 3rd for Cole Camp, however the Tigers increased their lead to 23 -16 by the end of 3.
Landon Bauer with a 3 at 4:08 in the 4th touched off a 13-2 come back for the Bluebirds! Brett Burdick and Loganbill with 5 each in that effort. Final score of Cole Camp 30, Green Ridge 27.
Scoring: Loganbill 9, Clark 7, Burdick 7, Bauer 3, Davis 2, Espey 2. Espey 4 blocks and 4 rebounds.
In the Varsity Girls game, Cole Camp came in at 6-17 and Green Ridge was 6-15. Both teams with talented underclassmen(women) gaining experience for next year.
One of those for Cole Camp, freshman Leah Allison with 4 points and a steal in the first 1:30. Green Ridge made a steal mid qtr and looked like a layup coming. Not so! Marilyn Hesse was about 5 ft behind at midcourt, but caught the Lady Tiger near the free throw line and flicked the ball away. Great Hustle! Emma Thayer with a corner 3 helped Cole Camp lead 11-7 after 1.
Strong mid game for another freshman Madilynn Ogle as she landed a 3 and a steal to layup combo. Thayer another 3 as Cole Camp led 23-16 at halftime.
Ogle with 5 and Thayer another dinger in the third. Payten Shoemaker made a steal and resulting layup at 10 seconds allowing the Lady Bluebirds a 34-25 advantage after 3.
Allison a traditional 3-point play in the last qtr. MacKenzie Moellman added 3 to the scoreboard as the Lady Bluebirds won it 42-35. They are now 7-17 overall and 4-4 in conference.
Scoring: Ogle 13, Thayer 9, Allison 9, Moellman 6, Timoshchuk 2, Shoemaker 2, Hesse 1. Freshman Elyse Cooley with 10 leading Green Ridge. Rebounds: Hesse 9, Moellman 8, Allison 6, Ogle 6.
The Green Ridge Booster Club had a freethrow / 3-point shot contest during halftime as a fundraiser. For $1, anyone could try their luck. Well 2nd grader Colborn Hesse, son of Andrew and Leslie went out there and hit 'em both! He won his choice of dessert. Likely a lot of games ahead for that young man!
So could the 3-16 Bluebird boys make it a sweep against the 9-11 Tigers?
A strong start would certainly help, and the Bluebirds delivered! Kolton Phillips with three offensive rebounds he put back up and in. Colton Dieckman added 4 in a 14-4 start. Phillips a steal layup combo late help Cole Camp lead 18-9 after 1.
Green Ridge had good luck from beyond the 3-point line in the 2nd qtr. Three long range shots fell in and a 1 point game by mid qtr. Bovey Clark nailed a 3 for Cole Camp, but another 3 by Green Ridge at the buzzer made it 23 - 23 at halftime.
The Tigers led by 2 at the 4-minute mark of the 3rd. Was a drought in scoring about the set in? While Green Ridge went scoreless the last 4 minutes of the qtr, Cole Camp added 9! Blake Abey with a steal to lay up, giving him 6 points in the qtr. Dieckman tossed in 4, but perhaps as much impact was a shot from Dasch Kaiser. With just a few seconds left, Kaiser caught an inbound pass on the left wing. He turned, shot, and drained a 3! Cole Camp up 36-29.
Dieckman with the first 6 in the last qtr for Cole Camp. Any hope for a Green Ridge comeback was silenced with an 8-1 run by the Bluebirds mid qtr. Kolby Bohon, who experienced foul trouble early in the game, pumped in a 3 and 4 of 4 freethrows down the stretch. Cole Camp put it away 53-40.
Scoring: Dieckman 16, Abey 10, Phillips 9, Bohon 7, Kaiser 6, Clark 3, Petersen 2. Soph. Jack Hoos with 11 leading the Tigers.
Districts February 24th at Windsor vs Sherwood at 4:30 for the boys. Girls at Tipton facing Eugene at 4:30 on Tuesday the 25th. Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article.

As of February 18th, brutal cold temperatures and winds were making it very challenging for humans and those with livestock to tend to. Almost a given there will be some death loss. Let's pray for a moderation very soon!
Roads were still clear February 17th and the Smithton basketball teams were in Cole Camp for combined girls and boys action.
Two qtrs of JV boys started the evening and the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Bovey Clark and Will Espey both scored for Cole Camp, but Smithton held a 9-5 lead after one qtr.
Brett Burdick tied the game early in the last qtr. Micah Davis and Ty Loganbill with baskets for Cole Camp also, but Smithton connected on 3 long range goals to maintain a slight lead. Clark with a 3 at 26 seconds made it a Cole Camp 20, Smithton 22 score. After Smithton missed two freethrows at 14 seconds, Cole Camp had a chance. Unfortunately an errant passed at 5 seconds caused a back court violation, so Smithton won 22-20.
Scoring: Burdick 7, Clark 6, Davis 3, Loganbill 2, Espey 2.
Smithton Varsity girls have had a tough year, made worse by the recent ACL injury to their point guard. With another player out sick, they had just five suited up to play. But credit 6th year coach Haley Kahrs, she was smiling and encouraging her crew to do their best!
Cole Camp led 10-2 after 1 qtr. Madilynn Ogle and Emma Thayer with 3's, Leah Allison with a steal to layup combo.
Smithton hit a pair of 3's in the 2nd qtr. Ogle and Marilyn Hesse matched those and the halftime score stood at Cole Camp 18-8.
MacKenzie Moellman with 6 in the third for the Bluebirds. Katherine Timoshchuk a basket and Payten Shoemaker a 3 made it 33 -13 after 3.
Ogle with 4 in the last qtr made the final score 37-13 favoring Cole Camp.
Scoring: Moellman 10, Ogle 10, Hesse 5, Allison 4, Thayer 3, Shoemaker 3, Timoshchuk 2. Sallie Goss with 8, Jenna Simmons 5 for Smithton. Rebounds: Ogle 11, Moellman 8.
Finally the Varsity boys with Cole Camp at 3-15 and Smithton was 9-14.
Cole Camp led 9-8 as the clock ticked toward the end of the 1st qtr. Connor Petersen blocked a tiger attempt at about 5 seconds, grabbed the loose ball and from well behind mid court, threw up a shot. You likely can guess the rest of the story. It banged through the rim for a 12-8 lead! That got the crowd buzzing!
Cole Camp gained a little more margin in the 2nd and led 22-14 at halftime.
Welcome halftime entertainment featured the team mascots! The Tiger and the Bluebird made a couple passes up and down the court until the Bluebird lost his shoe! Down went to bird, but the Tiger helped him up and they shook paws to wings.
Smithton got back in the game with an 8-0 spurt early 3rd. Blake Abey with 7 and Dasch Kaiser with 4 retained a slight lead for Cole Camp. But the Tigers scored the last 6 to lead 34-33 after 3.
Score was tied at 41 with 3 minutes to go in the 4th. Several close calls between whether blocking fouls on Cole Camp or charging fouls on Smithton. None went Cole Camp's way, and Smithton capitalized with a 9-2 run. Kolton Phillips and Abey with baskets in the last 13 seconds, but Smithton prevailed 52-47.
Scoring: Petersen 13, Abey 11, Phillips 7, Dieckman 6, Kaiser 6, Bohon 4. Ryan Pond with 19, all in the 2nd half for Smithton. Rebounds: Kaiser 10, Abey 9, Phillips 7. Bohon 4 steals.
This being National FFA week, a shout out to the following basketball players also in the FFA program. MacKenzie Moellman, Marilyn Hesse, Alivia Haase, Leighton Tinney and Lauren Hesse. Chapter president Colton Thompson, Spencer Godwin, Colton Dieckman, Ty Loganbill, Kolton Phillips and Chaning Alumbaugh. One of the most worthwhile organizations available to students, the benefits last a lifetime! Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article.
