High School Boys and Girls Basketball: The Bluebird basketball bus headed to Pettis County January 14th for 2 1/2 games vs the Mustangs. In the JV boys game which was to be 2 qtrs, Cole Camp moved ahead 14-7 in the first 5 minutes. Ty Loganbill led the way with 6, Bovey Clark a long 3. However Northwest scored 6 late so a slim 14-13 lead for Cole Camp. Similar pattern in the 2nd qtr as Cole Camp rebuilt their lead to 7. Blake Abey with 4, Landon Bauer and Brett Burdick 2 each. But again the Mustangs came a galloping back and tied it with 2 seconds on a 3-point shot by Donovan Dexter. So 24-24 after 2 qtrs. Coachs decided 2 minutes of overtime, and a free throw each by Abey and Micah Davis were the result for Cole Camp. Northwest added 7 and so claimed a 31-26 win. Scoring: Loganbill 8, Abey 7, Bauer 4, Clark 3, Burdick 2, Davis 2. Dexter with 17 for the Mustangs. Varsity girls next as Cole Camp (2-8) met the (10-3) Lady Mustangs Not sure if the Lady Bluebirds locker room had heat in it or not, they came out rather cold offensively. Northwest had a 10 pt lead before Katherine Timoshchuk scored Cole Camp's basket. Northwest led 14-2 after 1. MacKenzie Moellman with 4, Emma Thayer and Kaitlyn Whitworth downtown 3's in the 2nd qtr for Cole Camp. Mary Walker, a left-handed ballhandler scored 7 leading the Mustangs to a 28-13 halftime margin Payten Shoemaker nailed a 3 as part of a 9 pt effort in the 3rd. Jr. Gabby Meyer, who recently joined the 1000 pt club at Northwest, added 3 so a 31-22 game after three qtrs. Northwest hit a couple 3's early 4th qtr, but Cole Camp didn't throw in the towel. Whitworth 2 fieldgoals, Madilynn Ogle and Thayer each 3-point shots. Final score of Northwest 41, Cole Camp 32. Still a loss but considering coming back from 16 down, Cole Camp outscored the Mustangs 30-27 in the last periods. That's a great effort! Scoring: Whitworth 9, Thayer 8, Timoshchuk 5, Moellman 4, Shoemaker 3, Ogle 3. Walker and Elaina Buckley 12 each for Northwest. Meyer has averaged 23 per game but just 9 tonite. Northwest had a fundraiser meal deal available and their turkey noodle soup, vegetable soup and chili options and desserts appear to go over very well on a cold evening. Finally the Varsity boys game and Northwest had a 4-7 record coming in, winning their previous two games. Balanced 1st qtr as each team had a small lead now and then. Kolton Phillips led the Bluebirds with 4, and a Brett Burdick basket at the buzzer gave Cole Camp an 11-9 lead after 1. Connor Petersen with 6 in the 2nd. Almost looked like he was going to try a hook shot as three defenders were not allowing him to square up to the basket. Great defensive work by the Bluebirds as they denied the Mustangs getting over half court in the required 10 second time frame. Cole Camp 19-18 at half. Senior Kolby Bohon lit up the scoreboard with a pair of 3's in the 3rd. Blake Abey a nice fake to clear a defender, then a basket. And on an inbound play, Dasch Kaiser did just that. He dashed down court, caught the ball and put it in. Cole Camp 30-24 with 8 minutes to go. Strong last qtr for Phillips. He completed two traditional 3-point plays plus another freethrow! And Abey tossed in 5 as Cole Camp stayed in the lead. The Bluebirds made 10 of 12 freethrow opportunities and so walked away with a 48-37 victory! Scoring: Bohon 11, Petersen 11, Phillips 11, Abey 9, Dieckman 2, Kaiser 2, Burdick 2. Tanner Johnson had 16 for Northwest, about 2 above average. Thank you to Arthur Keuper for this article.

Cole Camp Boys and Girls Basketball: From one night of Stover Tournament. First games of the New Year for Cole Camp were taking part in the Stover Invitational Tournament. Weather kind of played heck with the scheduling but both the girls and boys played on January 9th. The Lady Bluebirds met #2 seed Knob Noster in the high school gym at 6:00 p.m. MacKenzie Moellman scored 5 of her teams 9 in the first qtr. Knob Noster lead 12-9 after 1. Katherine Timoshchuk scored 8 from close range in the second qtr. Soph. Ella Goodrich scored 11 leading the Panthers. Halftime score of Knob Noster 28-20 over Cole Camp. Due to the boys game starting in the dome down the hall, don't have a lot of 2nd half info. However the Lady Panthers did win by a final of 67-48, which was much closer than when these two teams met early in the year! Leading scorers for Cole Camp. Timoshchuk 15, Whitworth 12, Moellman 9. Sorry, don't have the rest of the scores. The Bluebird boys also faced Knob Noster Thursday evening and made a good effort after a long layoff. Knob Noster had defeated Cole Camp in the Warsaw tournament by 26, so a 10 to 15 point game would be a big improvement! Connor Petersen with 6 points as Cole Camp led 6-0 through mid first qtr. Knob Noster answered with the next 8. Dash Kaiser with 2 of 2 freethrows later, but the Panthers led 10-8 after 1. Couple early layups for Knob Noster in the 2nd qtr led to a Bluebird timeout. Cole Camp got a boost from freshman Brett Burdick as he had a long range 3 and then a drive to the basket for 2. Petersen used his height to add another 4. Score at halftime was Knob Noster 23, Cole Camp 17. Two 3 point missiles opened the 3rd qtr for the Panthers. Cole Camp mustered just 3 in the qtr. Kolton Phillips with a field goal and a free throw by Bovey Clark. Panthers up 31-20 after 3 periods. Petersen with another 6 in the last qtr. Burdick again scored from downtown to make it a 7 point game with 2 minutes to go. That's doing good! However Knob Noster outscored Cole Camp 9-2 from there to win 45-31. Scoring: Petersen 16, Burdick 8, Phillips 4, Kaiser 2, Clark 1. Ethan Gentry with 15 leading Knob Noster. Petersen 9 rebounds and 5 blocks. Knob Noster didn't run away with this game, though they certainly had the most exotic shoes. The following colors were being worn by the players. Black, white, orange, green, teal, pink, yellow, gray, blue, and gold. Whatever happened to the days of school colors? Thank you to Aurthur Keuper for this article.

There will be school at Cole Camp on Monday but if roads in your area are not safe, then use good judgment on driving.

Cole Camp will be in session tomorrow, Monday, January 13. Some roads are still slick. Take it slow and allow extra time for the drive Dress for cold weather and dont take risks. Students need to return AMI packets. Bus drivers may be calling folks on their routes with information. Parking lots are cleared as best they can be but there are large drifts in places. Stay out of them.
