Bluebird Basketball: Consolation bracket games of the Kaysinger Conference Tournament took place Thursday February 5th at State Fair Community College.
The Cole Camp boys faced Stover at 6 p.m., their 3rd meeting of the year. And from the start it looked like the Bulldogs (6-12) meant business. A pair of 3's and nine 2-point fieldgoals for Stover in the 1st. Cole Camp countered with 6 from Blake Abey, 4 from Kolton Phillips and Bovey Clark a long 3 leading the way. Still Cole Camp trailed 18-24 after 1 qtr.
The lead grew to 11 early 2nd qtr, but a solid performance by the Bluebirds narrowed that. Abey and Will Espey with 4 each and Colton Dieckman a basket and 1 of 2 freethrows produced a 29-30 score nearing halftime. Stover made 2 freethrows at 3 seconds and so led 32-29 at intermission.
Dasch Kaiser opened the 3rd with a fieldgoal, and he would add 2 freethrows later. Brett Burdick and Clark hit pay dirt from downtown, yet Stover hit 3 long range baskets along the way. Phillips with a pair of freethrows at 22 seconds gave Cole Camp a 49-47 lead, but Gavin Welpman tied it up again at 49 after 3.
Both teams scoreless for the first 2:30 of the last qtr. Then Abey with a 3, followed by 5 for Stover. A 3-pointer for Stover at 3:46 produced a 4 point lead. Abey connected on a corner 3, but Stover also scored and still led 61-57 with 2:06 to go. Espey with a fieldgoal and a very timely block of a Bulldog shot at 1:10. Dieckman a basket at 36 seconds tied the game at 61. Espey was fouled at 9 seconds and made 1 of 2 freethrows. Stover certainly had a chance to score in the waning seconds, but nothing fell through the net. Therefore Cole Camp escaped with a razor thin 62-61 victory!
Scoring: Abey 18, Phillips 11, Espey 10, Dieckman 8, Kaiser 6, Clark 6, Burdick 3. Welpman with 20 for Stover. Rebounds: Espey 9, Dieckman 8, Abey 8, Kaiser 5.
The Lady Bluebirds were next on court facing the Lincoln Lady Cardinals. Low scoring 1st qtr as Payten Brandt with a 3 led Cole Camp to a 6-5 score after 1.
Very productive 2nd qtr for Lillyann Mellen as she scored 9! Leah Allison a pair of fieldgoals helped Cole Camp move ahead by 10 by mid qtr. Katherine Timoshchuk and Lauren Hesse with scores in the last minute for a Cole Camp 23-15 lead at halftime.
Baskets were hard to come by early 3rd qtr for Cole Camp. But Brandt was still playing defense, drawing a charging foul on Lincoln. Half of Lincoln's 12 points came from the freethrow line. Brandt nailed a 3 late preserving a 34-27 lead with a qtr to go.
Rebekah Helland cut the lead to 5 early 4th qtr, but that was as close as the teams got to each other. Mellen nailed a 3 and 2 freethrows, and Madilynn Ogle a steal to layup combo helped clinch a 45-36 victory for the Lady Bluebirds.
Scoring: Mellen 19, Brandt 10, Allison 5, Ogle 3, Timoshchuk, Dieckman, Carl, Hesse all 2 each. Helland with 12 pacing Lincoln.

Leah Allison and Lillyann Mellen opened the Cole Camp scoring with 3's. In fact those two did all the scoring in the 1st qtr for the Lady Bluebirds. Mellen with 9 and Allison 5, just enough for a 14-12 lead over the Gremlins after 1.
Allison 2 freethrows and a fieldgoal to lead Cole Camp in the 2nd qtr. Kristin Carl and Madilynn Ogle a basket each, and Payten Brandt held her ground to draw a charging foul on Sacred Heart. Cole Camp ahead 24-18 at halftime.
The Gremlins quickly added 5 in the third before Brandt nailed a 3. Sacred Heart outscored Cole Camp 8-2 from mid qtr on though and so they now led 31-29 after 3.
A freethrow and a fieldgoal pushed the Gremlin lead to 5 at the 3-minute mark of the 4th. Mellen a basket and later Allison a long 3 at 1:48 to tie the game. Unfortunately no more scoring for Cole Camp and Sacred Heart made 2 of 4 freethrows to win 36-34.
Scoring: Mellen 13, Allison 12, Brandt 3, Timoshchuk 2, Carl 2, Ogle 2. Allison 9 rebounds, Mellen 8. Carl 6 steals. Freshman Aspen Carl with 10 leading the Gremlins.
Then at 2:30 p.m. in the Fred Davis multi-purpose center the Cole Camp boys and Sacred Heart boys tipped off. Could Cole Camp, seeded # 5 pull off an upset of # 4 Sacred Heart?
Sacred Heart moved ahead 5-2, then a nice 10-2 run by the Bluebirds! Bovey Clark a downtown 3 helping Cole Camp to lead 12-7 after 1.
No three-point baskets by either team in the 2nd qtr, but lots of two-point fieldgoals. Colton Dieckman, Dasch Kaiser and Kolton Phillips each two fieldgoals for Cole Camp. Sacred Heart scored 18 in the qtr, all 2 at a time. Cole Camp with a slim 27-25 margin at the break.
Several ties in the 3rd. Philips with 4 to lead the Bluebird scoring. Blake Abey a basket mid qtr, but a 3 late had given the Gremlins a 37-35 lead. As the clock was running down, Brett Burdick was being closely guarded near the free throw line. Burdick threw up an off balance over the shoulder shot that you guessed it, down it went for a 37-37 tie to end the 3rd qtr!
Dieckman put Cole Camp ahead opening the 4th. But a 9-3 surge by the Gremlins mid qtr proved to be the deciding factor. Dieckman and Abey baskets late but Cole Camp never could get back to back scores. Final of Sacred Heart 52, Cole Camp 49. A little short but a huge improvement over the thumping Cole Camp took 4 days ago.
Scoring: Dieckman 14, Phillips 12, Abey 9, Kaiser 9, Clark 3, Burdick 2. Mason Trelow scored 18 leading the Gremlins. Rebounds: Phillips 10, Kaiser 9.
During warmups, the Cole Camp Lady Bluebirds were wearing t-shirts noting Coach Shearer had recently turned 50! Many more close games like these and he may feel 55 by seasons end? Thank you to Arthur Keuper for writing this article!!
